Great house, right next to the cemetery which makes for great views from the roof deck. Location was perfect for us, away from the hustle-and-bustle of Duval but only a few minutes' walk. House itself was very clean, with all expected amenities that worked well. Pool is not huge but the back outdoor area is very private and comfortable for a few people, shaded for comfort on warm days. Only issue is that because of proximity to the cemetery and another house's gravel driveway across the street, both of which are hangouts for chickens/roosters, the house has a built-in alarm clock because the chickens start their calls early. Not an issue for us, we're early risers anyway, but if you want to sleep in a lot on your vacation, this may not be the best house. Overall a very pleasant stay.
Well-maintained charming Old Town home with everything needed for renters. Even had color-coded towels so we could keep track of whose was whose. Good street parking. Picket fence behind which we kept our rented bikes. HOWEVER, this house is across from a vacant lot where about 28 chickens live (we counted). A woman down the street feeds them and they go back and forth to the cemetary across the street. Sometimes they walked across the street and perched on the sidewalk or street right in front of the house. They started crowing at 130-330 AM and didnt stop until about 8-9 AM. We were exhausted- did not have one good night of sleep. Ear plugs, pillows, and closing the windows did not work. Often four - eight roosters crowing at once.
Chickens, chickens, chickens. This funky part of Key West's charm is EVERYWHERE. There might be a few more extra birds around this house but they tend to roam and move about. So, just incase, bringing a pair of ear plugs for any Key West rental is a good investment.
My husband and I rented this home for one week. The rental fee was expensive, so we expected the home to be in very good condition. We were disappointed when we walked in and saw that this is a home that needs updating. We were also surprised that the only parking was on the street and not always available. The location is a little too far from Duval Street, so you may want to rent a place closer.
The Grinnell Getaway is one of those older, charming Key West homes. The owners just renovated part of the kitchen and redecorated the living area. The house is located about 5 blocks from Duval St though it's one block from many restaurants on Truman Ave. There's lots of on-street parking in-front and near the house though, as with many downt town properties, we can never guarantee you'll find one infront of the house . The house has a lovely second floor patio with great views of the neighborhood and it is now Wifi ready!
We loved the age of the house, the care with which it was renovated and its airy, open floor plan. The furnishings seem just right. The landscaping creates a backyard haven and the pool and fountain are a welcome end-of the day beacon. We enjoyed being next to the cemetery except for the all-night lights which thoroughly confused the roosters! We recommend earplugs. The washer and dryer placement with opposing opening doors is rather inconvenient - an area that might be arranged differently in the future. This was our second rental with Rent Key West. The first was a studio on Ann Street. We have been very pleased and satisfied with both experiences.
Charming place that's everything as advertised. We're planning to go back Spring of '10. You'll be about 5 blocks from the heart of the night life. Cab ride from the airport is about $21 including tip. You won't need a car the rest of your stay -- everything is within an easy walk. "Neighbors" are very quiet (you're across the street from an historic KW Cemetery). Back yard has a beautiful pool/jacuzzi and is totally private. Perfect for two couples.
We could not have asked for a better location. The house had everything we needed plus an amazing backyard. It really made me feel like I was on an island!
Home was exterminated while we were there but there was an excessive amount of bugs, and the door was left unlocked by service man. Location of house was good, had to purchase toilet paper, hand soap, etc. Supplys were not adequate. Rented home from private owner in past that was immaculate (and less expensive). Dissapointing experience overall, expected more.
The charming and rustic Grinnell Getaway just had some recent interior renovations to the kitchen and living area. This house, like so many in the Keys, just experienced a minor (airborne) termite infestation which is typical during the warmer months. There is a regular cleaning and pest control service for the home. Rent Key West Vacations supplies its properties with a starting supply of paper products and soaps, anything beyond that amount is the guest?s responsibility. Unlike a hotel, there is not a daily service to replenish those items.
