The paddlers looked to me like diehard surfers that couldn’t catch a wave in Key West and instead found an innovative use for their surfboard by adding a paddle. Additionally, I found 99 percent of paddlers seem to be in incredible shape, tan and sport name-brand sport apparel. I was born with very little sports enthusiasm so this new sport was especially intimidating. All my reservations aside, something kept pulling my interest towards it. Overtime I looked at paddle boards in shops, observed paddlers on the ocean and discovered people who were involved with the local businesses that hosted tours and board rentals. My curiosity kept growing.

On the brink of my 28th birthday I decided to try something new and proclaim a new take on life, as I seem to do every year on my birthday. This year my goal was to try paddle boarding. I invited my husband to tag along, as his curiosity was right in tune with mine. I didn’t eat a whole breakfast the morning of our first venture. My nerves were chaotic and my stomach in knots. I’m not sure why I was so fearful. I love the ocean and adore being in it, near it and on it whenever possible.

Our first trip lasted two hours. I sat and kneeled most of the time. I learned that while sitting or kneeling feels more stable, it takes much more effort to paddle efficiently. I sweat like crazy, especially when my husband seemed to be paddling with minimal effort and maintained a 100 foot lead. The view was simply breathtaking, especially in the morning hours when the water was calm. I was happy to be done, but so thankful I tried it. I spent the rest of the day eating horribly unhealthy junk food and laying around the house. I guess I felt like I deserved it.

Shortly after my first paddle I discovered a local water sports company, Lazy Dog, was offering a six-week beginner’s paddle training course. I was apprehensive to try it; did I mention how out of shape I am? With encouragement, I signed up for the class, which I’m now halfway through. Each week is a one hour session and we’ve covered a little more distance each week. With the time limit of one hour, I felt extreme concern that I wouldn’t be able to increase my distance so quickly. Our first paddle was about 1 mile long and last week I paddled 3.5 miles in just about the same amount of time.

For me, paddleboarding is the perfect metaphor for my life; much of it is about balance. If you stand too much to the left or right you will fall off. If you’re not centered on your board, you’re more likely to fall into the water or find it very difficult to paddle forward. Using the right paddle technique is essential to propelling yourself in the right direction. If your paddle is too far away from the board, you tend to wobble and veer to the right or left. When you keep your paddle close to your board you’re more likely to move straight ahead. It’s also a mental workout! If I get stuck against a current or against a strong wind and think “I’ll never get out of this”, odds are it will feel like a heavy challenge. However, if I keep my head down and try to enjoy the scenery while giving a tough paddle, I find I get unstuck much quicker.

Regardless of my experience and opinion, its observable fact that paddleboarding is becoming quite the hot sport. Grab the latest sports and fitness magazine off the news shelf and you’re likely to find an article about it. Lazy Dog has a media page in which they seem to be collecting local news about the sport. I was able to wrangle up a few other resources (PaddleBoarding.com, Standup Paddle Magazine and Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine to name a few).

That being said, I want to give a shout out to the other Key West water sports companies who offer paddleboarding. I go to Lazy Dog because I have friends that work there and I’ve had such a great experience. Eventually I’ll branch out to other companies and you should too! Here are a few other Key West companies that offer paddleboarding as well as other fun water activities:

In last week’s blog post, we suggested enjoying your Key West vacation rental during the day and heading out for the evening. We have a great suggestion for you this month’s business of the month.

Key West is full of restaurants and various dining options. There are certainly plenty of options to suit everyone’s taste and preference. If you’re looking for fine dining and craving Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, we strongly suggest Antonia’s. Located at 615 Duval Street, this fine dining establishment is full of charm. As a long standing “fixture” of a Key West restaurant, Antonia’s attracts many locals as well as tourists with its old world ambiance and fine white tablecloths. Reservations are highly suggested for both lunch and dinner.

Everything at this Italian eatery is fresh and prepared to order. You can watch the chef rolling out the day’s fresh made pasta through the window early in the day. The owners travel to Italy annually to research recipes, so you can expect authentic meals here. Expect personal service from the staff; perhaps even from one of the proprietors.

And now for the menu…

Starters, or antipasti, like caprese (homemade mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, basil and extra virgin olive oil) or the calamari in brodetto (grilled and sliced baby squid with spicy tomato sauce, garlic, a touch of red pepper, olive oil and parsley) are highly recommended favorites. Choose from several pasta favorites like gnocchi del giorno (homemade potato gnocchi with your choice of sauce: gorgonzola cream, meat ragu, or pesto). The pesce and carne menus feature fresh local seafood, beef, veal and lamb. Pair your meal with a vintage port or cognac, American wine or a cocktail from the bar. Finish off with a decadent dessert such as gelati, sorbet, or others. A tray of cookies accompanies your bill to help sweeten the deal.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere, you know that the economy is serving up less than favorable conditions for everyone. Consumers are spending less and businesses are looking for creative ways to cut costs. The good news is, even under less than ideal economic circumstances, you can still afford a great Key West vacation rental. Keep reading to see our ideas and suggestions for receiving greatest value for your vacation dollar.

Save on baggage fees – With airline baggage fees increasing across the board, it’s becoming more and more expensive to fly. Here’s a cost-saving idea: send a package with your vacation essentials to us. FedEx ground ships suitcases often at cheaper prices than the baggage charge by the airline. We’ll deliver the package to your Key West vacation rental on the day of your check in. It costs less and is less hassle. Arrive with your belongings safely secured rather than lugging them around town.

Bring less – All Rent Key West vacation rentals have washer and dryers available to you! Which means you can pack less! We’re no fashion experts, but two pairs of shorts and a few shirts can create several outfit combinations! Wash one load of laundry mid-trip to create double the outfit choices.

Cook at “home”- Chances are, you’re in the vacation mode and want to sleep in. Don’t rush out for breakfast! Stop by one of Key West’s grocery stores to pickup breakfast and lunch essentials and make them at home. You’ll save more money to spend on your nightly outings. Try baking an oven omelet with a few eggs and veggies as ingredients; it will last you several days!

Don’t sell yourself short of having a terrific vacation! A few creative ideas can help save a few pennies without compromising your outcome. Rent a Key West vacation rental today and still afford the getaway you deserve.

Who wouldn't want to stay in with a kitchen like this?

Key West holds a special place in its heart for architecture and real estate. An afternoon stroll through an Old Town neighborhood will open your eyes to the structural beauty of Key West. Yards are beautifully landscaped and accented with courtyards, gardens and pathways. Some of the city’s Victorian and gingerbread style homes date back to the 1800s. Renovations and new foundations are a delight. Save room, because we have a treat for you!

The Windsor Townhomes are the perfect complete package for your Key West vacation stay.

Winter is the best time of year to travel south. What better destination than Key West? Why come to Key West in January? The truth is that January is one of the best times to plan your vacation to Key West for a number of reasons. The holidays have passed and Key West begins to slow down for awhile. January is the slowest of our winter months. Come down to escape the cold and beat the crowds! The sun sets just after 6:00 p.m. leaving plenty of time to enjoy the night life. The average air temperature is between 65 – 75 degrees (Fahrenheit).
You’ve all heard about Duval Street and the endless flow of adult beverages it hosts. You should know there is so much more of Key West nightlife to enjoy! There are plenty of places to look for fun after the sun goes down, but here are a few of our favorites.

Begin your evening with a soothing and relaxing sunset cruise. Sebago Watersports offers a champagne sunset cruise aboard a spacious catamaran. This two hour cruise includes free champagne, margaritas, beer, wine, and soft drinks. If you prefer something more intimate, schedule a three-hour private dinner cruise also offered by Sebago. Begin your fully customizable menu by selecting beef, fowl or seafood. Head over to their website to check out sample menus for your dinner choices. Rated the #2 sunset cruise in North America by Coastal Living Magazine, Danger Charters hosts an upscale and relaxed sail appropriately nicknamed “Wind & Wine”.

Climb aboard this traditional Skipjack and enjoy 8 different wines, a selection of beers and hors d’oeuvres.

Dare to be scared on your choice of one of a kind Key West ghost tours. Head out on foot to be spooked with The Original Ghost Tours of Key West. These walking tours depart twice nightly and last 90 minutes. The 1.5 mile walking tour is featured on the History Channel, Travel Channel, Discover Channel, Learning Channel and the BBC. Reservations are highly recommended. Be prepared; this tour runs rain or shine! If walking isn’t for you, try the Ghosts and Gravestones trolley tours. Discover some of the spookiest secrets about the island and its past residents. Wear comfortable shoes- there is a small walking portion. These tours also run rain or shine.

For a different approach, try a casual dinner at one of our fine restaurants. Nibble on delicious delights and sip a fine wine at Nine One Five. Located on Duval Street, this award-winning Victorian style venue serves up fancy feasts until 2 am. Enjoy your alfresco dinner on either of their two wrap around porches. Our favorite dishes include the Tuna Dome or the Sizzling Thai Whole Fish. Try a tapas style dinner at Santiago’s Bodega. Indulge in many savory bites such as the spicy shrimp bisque or the steamed middle neck clams. Choose from a large wine selection to compliment your meal. This hidden gem fills up fast, so make reservations. Perhaps you’d prefer to make dessert your main meal. You’re in luck! Wednesday through Sunday (hours are 6 pm – 1 am) satisfy your sweet tooth at Better Than Sex. Dare to try the sinful chocolate rimmed wine or champagne.

In other parts of the United States, fall means a large change in the weather. The leaves change color and the temperature drops. Air conditioners get turned off and heaters come back to life. People swap their flip flops and tank tops in for socks and sweaters. The first snowfall is just around the corner...

Key West has a few of these changes though they aren't as extreme. The temperature doesn’t go down much but the humidity in the air declines.

Trade your gloomy fall trees in for bright
colored tropical foliage!

Our air conditioners get turned down or off and we rarely rely on heaters. Locals never trade in their flip flops or our tank tops; we just pair them with jeans instead of shorts.

The winter holidays are very unique in Key West. Since a good percentage of the locals work in the tourism industry, we stay put during the holidays. A number of people have very tiny kitchens making it difficult to cook a large spread or host a table of guests. Luckily, many restaurants take this stress off our backs and host their own festive meals.

Pirates and Paradise brings swarms of seafaring adventure to the shores of Cayo Hueso.

We also make our own festive island traditions. This year the Pirates in Paradise festival celebrates its 11th year during November 26-December 5th! The ten day celebration brings a variety of swashbuckling events including arts, culture, literature, nautical excursions (to name a few). The City of Key West’s Holiday Parade (305-809-3881) on December 4th welcomes Santa and Mrs. Claus as they float down Truman Ave. In mid-December the Schooner Wharf Bar hosts the 19th annual Schooner Wharf Bar/Cruzan Rums Lighted Boat Parade also known as the Bight before Christmas. Watch lighted boats parade in the Historic Seaport in competition for the best decorated vessel!

Get into the holiday spirit by taking a self-guided tour of beautifully decorated inns and houses. The Holiday Historic Inn Tours take place in the evenings on December 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th. Your $25 ticket includes light appetizers and holiday refreshments; not to mention the many dazzling lights and displays! The Old Island Restoration Foundation hosts their 51st Annual House Tours. The much anticipated tours run December 28-29th only. The tour features lovely homes and gardens of 5 private homes.

The Mermaid and the Alligator house and gardens are decorated
every holiday season with thousands of lights.

Key West’s music scene is eventful and exciting; the holidays are no exception. Tune in to a variety of concerts and performances around the city. On November 28th Raymond Dean Walters presents the Annual Community "Messiah" Concert (305-745-1409). The Keys Chorale Holiday Concert on December 3rd and 4th is a musical event you can’t miss. The hugely popular St. Paul’s Community Christmas Concert on December 19th features dozens of local musicians.

Before you know it 2011 will be here. Key West celebrates in a number of different ways on December 31st. Ring in the New Year with Sushi as she drops from a giant red high heel at Bourbon Street Pub (305-296-2388). The Liberty Clipper drops a pirate wench at the Historic Seaport (305-292-3302). Perhaps you’d enjoy Sloppy Joe’s (305-296-2388) conch shell drop! No matter where you choose to indulge you’re sure to enjoy the celebration. Come back year after year and create a holiday tradition you will never forget!

Locals love this time of year; island life slows down, the waters are calm, the fishing and snorkeling are fabulous and local businesses offer special summer rates.

This is a great time to visit the Keys and relish summer on the islands, come down for the summer and ‘live life like a local’!

Fishing in the summer months is very popular. The calm, clear warm waters make for the best fishing in the continental US. Among the most popular summer catches are Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Blue Marlin, Snook and Mahi Mahi as well as many others. Fishermen can enjoy backcountry flats fishing as well as off shore blue water fishing. With the Gulf Stream just a couple miles off of our shores fishermen come from all over the world to fish the Keys waters. If you are an avid fisherman or just a beginner join up with one of our island’s many talented fishing guides and plan to spend time out on the water learning about Keys fishing. Be sure to ask us about fishing trips and we will help you choose a fishing charter. There is nothing like eating your ‘just caught’ fresh fish that night for dinner. Many of our local restaurants will cook up your fish for you. Summer also means lobster season (mini lobster July 28-30th), so bring a tickle stick, a mask and snorkel and have a blast!

Hemingway himself was an avid fisherman and in July we celebrate the famous writer. Thursday, July 22-July 24 is the 30th Annual Hemingway Days.
Questions & Answers Regarding the Florida Keys
And the Gulf Oil Spill

Because of new developments regarding the Transocean/BP (British Petroleum) oil spill and its relationship to the Florida Keys, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council has updated this Question and Answer document that was originally published May 4 and revised on May 13. This should be helpful to answer questions from current or potential visitors. It is also published on the Keys website (www.fla-keys.com in a special oil spill-related section. Since May 3, that section has received some 50,000 views.

The following questions and answers are being provided for current and potential visitors to the Florida Keys.

I heard that the Keys are in imminent danger of being affected by the oil spill.
According to officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, a light sheen of oil from the Transocean/BP oil spill has entered the Loop Current. NOAA insists that the time it would take for this oil to travel to the vicinity of the Keys, it would be highly weathered and both the natural process of evaporation and application of dispersants would reduce the oil volume significantly, NOAA said. It is still unclear whether the weathered oil would actually arrive in Keys regions or bypass the area and remain either in the Loop Current or the Gulf Stream (see explanation of Loop Current below). The bulk of the spill should remain away from the Loop Current, NOAA said.

What is the Loop Current?
The Gulf Loop Current is a dynamic, clockwise warm-water current that carries water from the Yucatan Channel north to the Gulf of Mexico, then eastward and looping back down south off the Florida west coast, past the Dry Tortugas and into the Gulf Stream, also known as the Florida Current.

I have heard that oil will definitely hit the Keys and the impacts will be devastating.
NOAA and other officials say the kind of impacts the Keys and areas on the east coast might experience would be much different than what is transpiring in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Most oil spill experts say any oil carried by the Loop Current would be more dispersed and highly weathered by the time it gets to the Keys, which is some 475 miles from the spill site. That means it is highly unlikely that large "rivers" of heavy oil would impact the Keys. The oil entrained in the Loop Current would require persistent onshore winds or an eddy on the edge of the Loop Current for it to reach the Florida shoreline. If this were to occur, the weathered and diluted oil would likely appear in isolated locations in the form of tar balls. While arrival of oil in any form is unacceptable, tar balls are "significantly less toxic," according to Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Michael Sole. It is also possible that one area of the Keys could be affected and others not, or that the oil residues could remain in the Loop Current and Gulf Stream and completely miss the Keys.

What about the oil tar balls that were recently found in Key West and other parts of the Keys? There was a lot of news coverage and I heard they were from the Gulf oil spill.
The U.S. Coast Guard tested all tar balls and found none were from the oil spill. Finding tar balls in Keys waters or on area beaches is not an unusual occurrence. The Keys are located along a busy commercial shipping route, with some 8,000 vessels passing by on an annual basis, and commercial vessels sometimes discharge bilge water that has oil in it. Tar balls can drift into Keys waters from many other areas, not just the northern Gulf region.

What is a tar ball?
A tar ball is a blob of oil that has been weathered after floating in the ocean. Tar ball concentration and features have been used to assess the extent of oil spills and their composition can also be used to identify their sources of origin. They are slowly decomposed by microorganisms. While not dangerous to most people, tar balls can cause allergic reactions and should only be retrieved by trained personnel. Tar balls can sometimes occur naturally and as such are not always associated with oil spills.

Can you guarantee me that oil residues will not make its way into the Keys during my vacation?
Nobody can make a long-term guarantee that residues from the Gulf Coast oil spill will or will not be in the Keys. However, at the current time, expected impacts do not seem to be a serious issue for travelers. When making reservations for accommodations and water-related activities, it may be prudent to discuss in advance any cancellation and refund policies in the event oil residues impacts the immediate area of activity.

I hear authorities have shut down fishing in the Keys.
That is not true. A large area in the Gulf of Mexico, west of Florida and the Keys, is closed. But no areas of Florida, including the Keys, are under the order at this time. This means that Keys-caught seafood has not been affected and is safe to consume.

Is it safe to dive, swim and participate in other water sports in the Keys?
There are no advisories in the Keys currently in effect due to the Gulf oil spill. The Monroe County Health Department is monitoring the situation and would issue an advisory in the event of any health-related risk.

More than 40 web cams streaming live video from the Keys' waters, shorelines and area attractions are available for view.
Click to view live streaming video of Sombrero Beach in Marathon.

I'm apprehensive about traveling to the Keys because I don't want to lose money if oil comes and ruins my vacation.
Each property has its own cancellation policy. It is prudent to check with the hotel as well as any other Keys travel-related operator in advance to determine cancellation policies and if management will offer refunds or credits in the event oil adversely affects Keys waters.

I hear the Florida Keys and much of Florida are under a state of emergency
Nineteen of the state's 67 counties are under a state of emergency, even though no impacts have been seen in Florida as of Thursday, May 20. On Wednesday, May 19, the Monroe County Commission (the county that comprises the Keys) voted to ask Florida Gov. Charlie Crist to declare a state of emergency for the Florida Keys. That was primarily done so the Keys can qualify for federal reimbursement funding and small business loans, if needed. Visitors continue to be welcomed to all Florida areas that are under a state of emergency.

Are there any protective actions being taken to safeguard the environment, if needed?
The U.S. Coast Guard is the lead government agency responsible for oversight of any necessary cleanup and remediation activities. The Coast Guard works in conjunction with other local, state and federal authorities to enact a 725-page area contingency plan that includes oil spill response actions. Some of the other agencies involved are NOAA's Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the Department of the Interior, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Monroe County Emergency Management. All are operating under a Unified Command, guided by the Florida Keys Area Contingency Plan. Assessment and cleanup crews have been mobilized to mitigate tar balls, or any other unexpected effects. Currently, no protective actions are interrupting water- or land-related visitor activities in the Florida Keys.

When will this be over?
Officials don't know for sure. The outcome and timing depend on when leaks at the Transocean/BP well site can be plugged or effectively contained and how effective current mitigation efforts are in containing the oil already in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Where can I get more information on the oil spill?
The Keys tourism council is posting information - including official NOAA oil slick trajectory maps - on its website as well as on Twitter and Facebook.

Spill-related websites, primarily focusing on affected areas, include:
For those that wish to escape to the island and relish in the tranquil nature of summer, it is a wondrous time to visit. The calm waters are warm and crystal clear making the snorkeling and diving spectacular. Many restaurants offer hurricane specials and the margaritas taste that much better. Just because we are a tiny island at the bottom end of the entire United States, does not mean that you can't get here quite easily.

Many decide to fly all the way down into our small Key West airport. This is an especially nice trip for those who love to fly as the view of the Keys from the air is fantastic. On a clear day you can see the chain of islands arc down separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. You can see boats and cruise ships, you can see pods of dolphin or schools of shark; and as you head south you realize how far away you are from the hustle of the mainland. Various airports host airlines that fly directly into Key West. Most obvious are Miami and Ft. Lauderdale but Tampa, Orlando, Ft. Meyers, Charlotte, Atlanta and Orlando are good options as well.

Looking for a more affordable option? The drive down the keys is a great adventure in itself. If your flight arrives in Miami or Ft.Lauderdale, you can rent a car and take the 4 hour journey to Key West. Dotted along the US 1 Hwy are old Florida tavernas, shell shops, Florida-style sculptures, tropical plants for sale and more. You will cross over 43 bridges to get to Key West, the most notorious bridge being the 7 mile bridge that spans high over the turquoise waters. Expect to see herons, osprey, kingfishers, frigate birds and so much more on your drive down. Don't want to do the driving? Florida Sunshine Shuttle offers daily trips down the keys from either Miami or Ft.Lauderdale airports. For rates and schedule visit: www.floridasunshineshuttle.com. No matter how you decide to go, the drive is slow, just sit back and enjoy the ride, it is beautiful.

If you are on the West coast of Florida you may want to skip the long drive and take the Key West Express Ferry boat, from Ft. Meyers into Key West. Only a 4hour boat trip, the ferry is not only fast and affordable, but it is a great way to take in the salt air and the sunshine while letting someone else do the driving. For more information visit: http://ferryservicestokeywest.com.

Whatever type of transportation you choose, March is a glorious time of year to visit the Keys! See you at the end of the rainbow!

Join in on Key West’s 32nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Bar Stroll. A St. Paddy’s day parade like no other, the stroll takes you into notorious Key West Bars starting at the Atlantic Ocean and taking you all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

This Saturday March 13th let the fun begin and celebrate the Irish in all of us; I mean, who doesn’t like green beer? The contenders all meet at the Southernmost Beach Café, at the South end of Duval Street and work their way down Duval stopping at 8 other bars and ending on the Gulf Side at the Schooner Wharf Bar. Gathering of the Irish begins between 11:00-12:00 and first beers are served at noon. Go a little earlier and have a delicious breakfast on the beach at the Southernmost Beach Café and prepare yourself for the stroll. You can purchase tickets and T-shirts, shorts and the like, this week at any of the participating bars, Tickets are $30. Some words of wisdom to all who dare take on the Bar Stroll challenge: don’t do all your drinking at the start of the parade, or you will never make it to the end! And one other word of advice; make sure to dress up, go all out, you’ll be glad you did! Oh….and one other word, this is the bad news…that Sunday morning, March 14, the clocks Spring Forward, which means you will loose an hour of sleep. Set your clocks forward before you start your stroll!
